Vienna removing anti-Semite's name from avenue

VIENNA — The name of a late mayor known for his anti-Semitic views will be removed from a section of Vienna's posh Ring avenue, an official announced Thursday, in a change hailed by Jewish representatives but denounced by Austria's rightist party.

The section now called Dr. Karl-Lueger-Ring will be renamed Universiaetsring (University Ring) for the school that is located on that section of the avenue circling the inner city, the official said.

Adolph Hitler lived there when Lueger was Mayor around 1900. Lueger used to refer to Budapest as "Judenpest". Apparently, Vienna was getting a wave of Russian Jews at the time Who were en route to the U.S. and many Viennese found them to be "rude and unpleasant". Just Historical notes. Not endorsing anyone.
