    Default Multiculturalism behind the wheel

"I am Samoan and I don't understand Tongan, but I could make out they were plotting something..."

South Auckland Samoan taxi driver, Tele Tufunga, 68, attacked with a bottle and robbed by two youthful Tongan passengers. Hate crime? Not according to the NZ Herald; it was "all to evade a $53 fare".

    Default Diverse directions

Chinese Ying Tian cannot speak English and is pregnant. This week she was sentenced to two years and nine months imprisonment for drunkenly driving up an Auckland motorway in the wrong direction, eventually colliding with and killing Karen Yin Mei Yong, another ethnic Chinese, originally from Malaysia:

Soon after 12.30am on May 30 Tian - who had more than double the legal blood alcohol limit - entered the Southern Motorway at the Mt Wellington off-ramp and drove 5km in the wrong direction, weaving in and out of oncoming traffic.

It is understood up to 20 cars narrowly avoided the driver as they allegedly drove for about 5km south in the northbound lane from the Mt Wellington off-ramp, before colliding with Ms Yong in the fast lane near the East Tamaki interchange.

The Malaysian-born 49-year-old, from Mt Wellington, suffered extensive injuries in the smash and died in Auckland Hospital.

    Default Re: Diverse directions

We have an issue with new Chinese wannabe drivers in Canada.

These Chinese people don't like taking their driving test in the big cities where they tend to live.

Too hard, with red lights, traffic etc.

    So, what do they do?

The Chinese go outside the big cities to remote rural areas for their driving tests, so much so, that local people have trouble getting appointments in a timely manner.

So, if you see an Asian driver in a city in Canada, be careful. He possibly could not have passed his driver's license where he now drives.

Default Fabian Richard Graham, 32, is of decidedly non-Anglo-Celtic appearance.

South Auckland police are prosecuting him for dangerous driving; that is, while operating the pedals of a car with a shortened walking stick.

Mr. Graham, who is paralysed from the chest down from a previous accident, denies the charge.

    Default Bio O'Brien from Tuvalu

Bio O'Brien from Tuvalu (formerly administered by Britain as part of the then Gilbert and Ellice Islands) was convicted in Auckland of manslaughter for the 2008 killing of a 78-year-old:

Jasmatbhai Patel suffered critical head injuries when O'Brien pulled him from his van after a minor crash outside Unitec's Mt Albert campus in 2009.

Witnesses saw O'Brien, who was driving a black BMW, attack Mr Patel in rush hour traffic...O'Brien had several previous convictions, including assault and threatening to kill.

Released from prison in 2012¹ O'Brien successfully overturned his deportation order in 2015².

Last month O'Brien was back before the courts:

the charges arose out of an incident at a Pukekohe petrol station in August, where a man had called O'Brien out for cutting in front of him in the queue.

O'Brien responded by putting his hands to the victim's throat [with force³] for a second.

Outside the service station, he said he would "f...... shoot [the victim] in the head"

But he took his battle to the High Court and he was granted a judicial review.

That has led to the immigration tribunal reviewing the case and changing its decision.

It concluded his marriage would come to an end if he left, as his wife and his daughter would not move to Tuvalu.

It said his primary school-aged daughter would be at risk of emotional harm and his deportation could affect his wife's mental health.

A psychologist reported he had a low risk of re-offending and had been through programmes to learn to control his anger.

The tribunal concluded: "We find that the need to maintain the integrity of the immigration system is of modest weight only, given the length of time that has passed without further offending, the clear rehabilitation of the appellant and the sincerity of his remorse and regret for a momentary lapse, the consequences of which went far beyond what he had intended."

Default It is believed the coffin fell on to the road

    From today's NZ Herald (18 January 2017):

Yesterday police arrested multiple people after shots were fired at a Mongrel Mob member Tahu Kingi's funeral procession going from Kawerau to Whakatane.

This followed a brawl at the tangi on Friday when a Black Power member was allegedly attacked and run over. The Black Power then allegedly rammed the vehicle containing Kingi's coffin. It is believed the coffin fell on to the road....

...Whakatane's resident gang, Black Power, was allegedly trying to prevent the Mongrel Mob from entering.

The motorcade was escorted by 15 police officers as well as Armed Offenders Squad members.

    Default Near Wairoa

Last Sunday near "gang town"¹ Wairoa:

A man is in hospital with serious injuries after the hitch-hiker he picked up beat him senseless and left him lying on State Highway 2 before stealing his car....

The man, who is in his sixties, was found badly injured and lying on SH2 near Wairoa by a member of the public about 10.45pm on Sunday night....

Police senior sergeant Nick Dobson described the hitchhiker as a Maori man, aged in his 40s, possibly with a tattoo on his face.

Default Shane Paraha, 18 and Haumia Manuel, 35

From NZ Herald report earlier this week (22 May 2017):

A Whangarei man who pulled out a paintball gun and shot "rapid fire" at six people in a drive-by attack last December has been sentenced to 25 months in jail.

Shane Paraha, 18, appeared in the Whangarei District Court for sentencing after earlier pleading guilty to one charge of reckless disregard causing grievous bodily harm and five charges of assault with a weapon.

A female university student who was one of the six people shot at has lost an eye in the shooting and was forced to quit her studies.

A report from Auckland two days later:

Haumia Manuel, 35, is being sought over the alleged incident, which took place about 9am at the intersection of St Lukes Road and New North Road.

Police say a police van was travelling in the area when they observed a stolen car, and the driver then accelerated away through a red light.

Police followed, and the stolen car crashed into another car in the intersection, before the occupant left the vehicle.

He then ran down a line of cars waiting at the intersection trying car doors, until he found one which opened, and he pulled the member of the public from their car.

Police gave chase on foot, and Manuel allegedly reversed the car away, hitting the member of the public he had just pulled from the car.

An ambulance was called for them but treatment was not required.

Police say Manuel then fled in the stolen car...

    Default Speeding explanation no. 20

From a Radio New Zealand report earlier this week (13 June 2017):

The [Teachers Disciplinary] tribunal is considering charges against [former Māori Party president] Pem Bird, a school principal, following his conviction last year for driving at a dangerous speed, 169km/h, near Rotorua.

In a statement to the tribunal, Mr Bird said he was speeding because the car behind him was tail-gating him and refusing to over-take even when it had the opportunity to do so.

Mr Bird said he was sure the occupants of the car, who were Pākehā, did not like his car's Māori Party flags...

...The Education Council's Complaints Assessment Committee said in a statement the tribunal should censure Mr Bird and impose conditions on his continued teacher registration for three years.

It said Mr Bird had two previous convictions - for careless driving in 1994, and excess breath alcohol in 2004 - and had been caught speeding on 19 occasions between 1991 and 2013.

Speeding Bird was 'anxious' over tailgaters | Radio New Zealand News

From a NZ Herald report earlier this month (5 June 2017):

Murupara's Pembroke Peraniko (Pem) Bird was honoured with a Queen's Service Medal in 2008 but his work in education has not finished.

Today, he has been honoured again becoming a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to education and Maori...

...He leads a rural school in Murupara township - Te Kura Kaupapa Motuhake o Tawhiuau - and over the past few years has grown the multilingual and multicultural curriculum, which has culminated in it being the first indigenous school in New Zealand to open a Confucius Classroom to teach Chinese language and culture.
