"Calls for Poverty Bay to go by Maori name"

"A Gisborne councillor has stirred things up on the East Coast, by calling for Poverty Bay to go by its Maori name, Oneroa.

Manu Caddie says the place name has always painted Poverty Bay in an unfavourable light.

Our reporter Murray Robertson says Poverty Bay was the first place James Cook named in New Zealand, and there's feeling that it shouldn't be given away lightly.

He says Manu Caddie's suggestion of a dual name for the bay has some merit, and may spark interest locally.

Though he says it'd be a brave council who pushed the wrong buttons of public opinion on it."

This guy is another White libtard that’s gone native and a vote for him is a vote for the Maori agenda. His wife is a Maori and is the head teacher of the only total immersion Maori language childhood centre in Gisborne

    image of Tarsh Koia

She is the one with the laptop

So the guy is clearly a race mixer and his pet projects while in office include leading a national research project looking at traditional rites of passage that were the signs a Maori child has transitioned into adulthood, and how we might adapt those traditions for youth today.
Also he is the treasurer for the Rongo i te Kai Marae located in Waiapu Rd, Makarika

I guess he is working for the interests of some of his constituents well the brown ones at least.

As for promoting Maori language what a waste of time and money, most of his brown constituents can barely read and write in English. This language is the lingua franca for international trade and diplomacy in much of the world. How many of our trading partners and military allies have diplomats that can speak Maori? Let me guess none.
How many countries other than New Zealand is Maori spoken? Answer none.

It’s a hard enough job for teachers in this country to teach Maoris at all without wasting time on a useless language most people in New Zealand aren’t interested in learning.

    Default "on the far right"

It would indeed seem with respect to his proposal as regards the name "Poverty Bay", that Manu Caddie is not making any explicit claim of indigeneity for himself. The question as to the degree, if any, that he regards himself as indigenous would seem to be a relevant consideration in analysing his political activism. In this connection, I note that his name "Manu" might be reasonably assumed to be Maori (cf. Manu Bennett) and a photograph has been uploaded to Wikipedia (see below) which has associated with it the following comment:

"This photograph is of the Tauranga Moana kapahaka group He Toa Takatini (HTT). Marama Dey was the manager of the group and they performed at a range of music festivals as well as overseas and at Tauranga Historic Village on Sunday afternoons. The man in the glasses and beard is my father Graham Caddie, my sister Naera Caddie is the small blonde girl in the middle and I am the 8 year old boy on the far right.

    Principals back compulsory te reo

LAIRD HARPER Last updated 05:00 02/05/2012

Support for compulsory teaching of te reo [Maori} in schools is gathering momentum in Taranaki.

Trade Minister Tim Groser has called for the Maori language to be made mandatory for all school children in a bid to offer them different cultural perspectives.
While politicians argue the pros and cons, principals who talked to the Taranaki Daily News are siding with Mr Groser.
At Stratford Primary School the concept was already in practice.
Principal Kelvin Squire said it was a natural by-product of globalisation.

He said a te reo class was already compulsory for his students because it was "an essential learning area".
"It's about engagement with our country and it's also building on the children's brain development," Mr Squire said.

"Why should New Zealand 5-year-olds be any different to the Swiss who can speak Swiss-German, German and Austrian?"

Manu Caddie is a man with White ancestry who has bedded down with a Maori woman and has become an advocate for the Maori people and their agenda. Whether he considers himself indigenous or not he is clearly in their camp.
As for the poverty bay naming debate, this is part of a trend to replace European place names in New Zealand with Maori ones such as the attempt to rename Mt Egmont to Mt Taranaki and Mt Cook to Mt Aoraki.
This is an attack of the language of the White settlers who made this nation and undervalues their cultural view of New Zealand. Most people in this country are White and their language is English.

This brown washing of our nations place names is also an insult to the many cartographers, surveyors, and explorers of the colonial period who provided much of our knowledge of New Zealand’s geography. And by convention named the places they discovered.
The small number of Maori who can speak their own language can call these places what they wish. However I at least will use the names and language of my ancestors who colonized this land just as the Maori wish to do so.

Turangi streets to get a capital Te

GPS devices may pay attention to plans to rename almost a quarter of Turangi's streets - but some long-term residents certainly won't...

...The most drastic renamings include changing Gibson St [to] Hangarito St, Tod Close to Wharepapa Close, Crescent Reserve to Kohineheke Reserve and Cherry Tree Reserve to Te Koko Reserve.

Herekiekie St resident Colin Fowler, whose street would change to Te Herekiekie St, said it was ridiculous and didn't need to be changed.

"I would go and cut the Te off the front of the sign ... I wouldn't bother to change anything because it will still get delivered to Herekiekie St. But then again my Navman would put me in the wrong street."

Gary Gay, who worked as an engineer on various power projects in the area when the streets were being named, objected to changes which would wipe out the town's more recent history.

Gibson St and Dekker Drive - in an industrial area on the outskirts of Turangi - were named after project engineers Warren Gibson and Bert Dekker.

"I feel it was just a little bit small minded that those two names could not be retained for the contribution those two guys did for the recent history of the town," Mr Gay said...
