Vocal minority groups often assert a right to have children delivered to them on demand, either directly by the state or via donors in concert with new reproductive biotechnologies. Such a right has never been understood in relation to having children. A man and a woman who have made a permanent, exclusive and public commitment to each other have always had a right to try to have children by means that are respectful of the dignity of any child that may come into being.
In the case of orphaned children, they have always been well served by their placement with a man and woman who are married to one another. Our public and private efforts should be directed towards giving support to family forms that are in the interests of children.
Children deserve better than to have their best interests overtaken by those adults who see little value in marriage and public commitment or who assert so-called rights that do not exist.
