Here's some homes for sale in the Down East area:

2 bedroom with detached garage on 1/2 acre lot -- $26,900

4 bedroom on almost 3/4 of an acre with a view of the river in downtown Machias -- $49,900

2 bedroom on an acre of land with a view of the ocean in Calais -- $25,000

2 family duplex in downtown Baileyville (just outside of Calais) with owner financing -- $17,500

There are hundreds more just like them all over the area.

Who sales houses that size for under a 100,000.00?

A house like that in my area would be four times that much.
A nice trailer would be around 15 grand.
A nice two bedroom apt. would cost 60,000 to buy.
A two bedroom house on a quarter acre lot would be about $140,000.00


I have a relative who just bought a 5,500 square six bedroom house on a three quarter acre lot for $500,000.00.

I had no idea housing was that low back east. I just accepted that's what it costs to have a roof over my head.

Most of New England is much more expensive. In the Boston area, those same houses would go for ten times the amounts listed.

But up here in the Down East real estate is very cheap. You can find 1 acre lots for $200-$300.

The first pic is of the bridge into Bucksport with the downtown visible in the background. The other two are of the river valley with the 2nd one showing the view out to sea.

OH my goodness Taliesen.... look what I found online!! It's the cutest mostest oldest fashionable song that PERFECTLY compliments my Rocky Mountain pictures I am unable to post. My Grandpa used to sing this song for Grandma. Grandpa always told us that Grandma thought he was a God....because every night around dinner time she would lay burnt offerings before him.

Wow. Those are great shots of the Rockies. Nice song too.

Here's some pics of the "northern gateway" to the Down East. The first is a shot of the bridge from Calais, ME into St. Stephen, Canada and the last two are shots of St. Stephen as seen from the Calais side of the St. Croix river.

These are from the Machiasport Historical Society.

Machiasport stakes a claim to be the "birthplace of the US Navy." It's a very interesting story, if you ever find yourself in the area, stop in and get the tour.

The first pic is of a replica of the HMS Margaretta, the royal ship that was, err . . . commandeered and made the first US Naval vessel. The second is a replica of the privateer ship Unity, which was used to commandeer the Margaretta. The last is a pic of the view of the harbor behind the Historical Society. It's where the wharves used to be and possibly where the Margaretta was anchored.
