You know, I had never had really given much credence to boomerangs to be able to actually come back to the thrower, until one day I bought one. That is, your more traditional looking one, for my son, who I guess was about ten years old at the time. And of course, he was all tickled over getting this nice Boomerang. I was always a little curious though about how some ancient man, ever figured how to carve a stick to those specifications that could, not only fly, but would come back to you if you missed whatever it was that you were throwing it at.

I have heard that the ones designed to return are for practice.

The bigger heavier throwing sticks designed to kill game don't come back, and I guess that you would not really want it to anyway.

Yes just the weight and edges play an important role to wether it will actually arch back to you or only curve elsewhere. A conventional, edged boomerang could certainly be used to kill or wound birds and smaller animals. Of course, if it hit the target it would not return.
