Default "Americans are always liberal and noble"

As you know I enjoy studying German. I intend to be able to speak sehr gut at some point. I like to collect older pedagogical books, because of the amusing approaches. Here is a sentence from a conversational-approach book.

"Yes, sir; we call that "ein Trinkgeld" in German, and Americans usually give good tips. Americans are always liberal and noble."

    Publication date?

    1901

Just an example of what was squandered by two world wars. Obviously the Germans don't hate us today, but what a waste.

"Liberal" of course doesn't imply leftie there.

I'll use this thread to briefly discuss various German textbooks, a lovely great pile of which just arrived today. They seem to get more race-mixed as the years go by.

Here's one from 2005: on page 13, there's a fat white girl talking to a fat black girl! Oh my how they enjoy each others' company! Isn't it sweet! Indeed on page one there are two asians and a mulatto talking to two beaming whites. Wie heisst du? Page 42: a white girl just all giggly over a Turk. Probably a Turk. And there's Tariq-- he's studying. OMG! Don't tell his pals, they'll call him 'oreo'.

Oops, on page 51 they didn't get the memo. Bunch of white people. Can't have that!!

    More fun later.

Its true that Germans were very interested in America, and well disposed to the U.S. They were consumers of American Culture (Americana). Wild Bill Cody's "Wild West Show", and anything to do with "Cowboys and Indians" were hugely popular in Germany. American Books were widely read as well. Not to mention that they were the heaviest European immigrants to America from the earliest times.
