A court plans to drop charges that the Rev. Al Sharpton’s ex-wife and daughter balked at police officers’ orders after a traffic stop, an incident the women said was a case of complaining, not crime.
The resisting arrest and other charges against Dominique Sharpton and her mother, Kathy Sharpton, were adjourned Tuesday in contemplation of dismissal. That means the cases will be closed in six months if the two stay out of trouble.
“In America, you have a right to object when you believe you’re being wronged, so long as you have committed no crime,” said their lawyer, Michael Hardy. “Neither of my clients committed a crime on that night.”
Manhattan prosecutors called the arrests legitimate but agreed with the planned dismissal.
Police had said Dominique Sharpton, 23, cut off a police car in traffic and became irate after being pulled over in Harlem in October.
She and her 53-year-old mother were accused of cursing at officers, ignoring orders to return to their cars, and resisting being handcuffed. Police said Kathy Sharpton also pushed an officer with her hands.
The women had faced up to a year in jail if convicted.
The Rev. Al Sharpton didn’t attend Tuesday’s court date, but he criticized the arrests via Twitter last fall.
