John Galliano faces racism trial in Paris

The extent of British designer John Galliano's long-term addiction to alcohol and prescription drugs is expected to emerge on Wednesday as he stands trial in Paris for racist insults against three people.

The flamboyant couturier, who is in a rehabilitation centre in Europe after treatment for addiction in the US, will attend the Paris criminal court hearing in front of three judges.

He could face up to six months in prison and €22,500 (£20,000) in fines if convicted of "public insults based on origin, religious affiliation, race or ethnicity" after three people said he shouted racist and antisemitic abuse at them in a bar.

Is he gay? Either way, just saying something to somebody shouldn't be an offense. Hurting someone physically, obviously, should always be a major offense.

My sources tell me that he is gay. Let's hope he can use that in his defense, lol.

LOL, it's not his addictions. His addictions don't dictate his true feelings. His addictions dictate that the drugs and/or alcohol come before (in importance) food or paying the bills - not his true feelings or morals.

It looks like Galliano would rather be known as a drug addict than a racist.

Testifying in a Paris courtroom Wednesday, fashion designer John Galliano says his anti-Semitic rants at a Paris café were fuelled by addiction, not bigotry.
“I never held those views — the things I’m being accused of today,” said the former creative director for Christian Dior, facing charges of making “public insults based on origin, religious affiliation, race or ethnicity.” He could face up to six months in prison and $32,000 U.S. in fines.
When asked for his last thoughts by the judge, Galliano says his work shows that he embraces and celebrates cultural diversity.
