Harriet Harman lends nomination to Diane Abbott in Labour leadership race

The Labour interim leader Harriet Harman is taking the controversial step of nominating Diane Abbott for the Labour leadership. Although strictly neutral in the campaign, Harman regards it as necessary to try to ensure a woman is on the ballot paper when nominations close.

A spokeswoman for Harman said "The Labour party knows that whoever wins the leadership contest, there will not be a men-only leadership at the top of the Labour party as Harriet will continue in her role as deputy leader. However, she feels that the party does not want the leadership election, and the debate that it will generate, to be men only.

The UK's first female black MP - who said she entered the race because she wanted to offer an alternative to the white, male, middle-class New Labour field - was helped to reach the 33 nominations she needed with the backing of fellow leadership contender David Miliband and acting Labour leader Harriet Harman.

Harman pushes discrimination plan

Equality minister Harriet Harman has set out plans to allow firms to discriminate in favour of female and ethnic minority job candidates.

They would increase fairness and diversity and help Britain compete in the global economy by being more open, she told MPs.

The plans would also bring together all previous discrimination law into a single piece of legislation which she said would cut red tape for business.

Allowing "positive action" would help organisations such as the police better reflect the communities they serve by recruiting more female and ethnic minority officers, said Ms Harman.
