Snow on the way as Britain in grip of cold snap
Snow is expected later in the week, as forecasters have warned Britain should brace itself for more wintry weather with below-freezing temperatures.
Rain is predicted to turn to snow as the week moves on
Gritters were on high alert over the weekend as bitterly cold weather moved in.
Rain is predicted to turn to snow as the week moves on and the mercury falls well below zero in many areas.
Gemma Plumb, a forecaster with MeteoGroup UK, the weather division of the Press Association, said: ''We might see some snow on Thursday, but it's too early to say for definite when it will occur and how much there will be.''
She said overnight Tuesday into Wednesday would see some of the coldest weather across the country, but added that the conditions were ''fairly typical for this time of year''.
Scotland saw lows of 23F (-5C) on Sunday night, while the North West dropped to 25F (-4C) and East Anglia and the South East saw temperatures down to 28F (-2C).
''It's looking cold over the next few days,'' Miss Plumb said.
It comes as the AA, the motoring organisation, warns that the country's roads could descend into chaos this winter because of a shortage of grit.
It said that stocks in half of local authority areas will only last for six days and there was a real risk of a repeat of the grit shortages experienced in February, despite assurances earlier this year from the Local Government Association that such a scenario would not happen again.

It comes just weeks after he registered the internet name ‘Low Carbon Capital Fund’ – thought to be a way of making money out of the demand for green technology.
In his speech, Mr Blair said there was a ‘huge amount of scientific support’ for the idea of man-made global warming.
