JULIA Gillard has tonight confirmed the Government wants to put an asylum seeker detention centre on Papua New Guinea's Manus Island following secret negotiations.
The Prime Minister said her newly appointed counterpart in PNG, Peter O’Neill, had given the matter “prompt consideration".
Talks will start “in the very near future” between officials from both countries to finalise a deal on how the centre would be run.
The PM's comments came as the latest boatload of asylum seekers arrived at Christmas Island, doubling the number of asylum seekers awaiting deportation to Malaysia.
The Government had been seeking a deal for months but were prevented from reaching one by political instability in PNG.

"When you gaze into the Abyss..." Julia, "...the Abyss looks back at you"!
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-08-1...talled/2837378It is the fourth boat to arrive since the Government's policy to send 800 asylum seekers to Malaysia in return for accepting 4,000 refugees came into effect.
That deal is currently on hold due to a High Court challenge.
Today's arrivals bring the number of asylum seekers potentially affected by the policy to just over 260.
Have you noticed a trend? The boat people couriers seem to have inside information, or the informal "a leak" on when and how to apply strategy to Julia Gillard!
PNG wants the boat people in their ramshackle Manus Island and that would be a improved living standard for some of the asylum seekers. The various countries that these people are fleeing from need to be sued. The various countries that require Australian, European and American attention, need to be taxed when politically stable for the inability to control their own government. These countries need to have a high-brow political presence controlling their behaviour. Mind you, the people are running to our countries because they like our values - our forefather's White Values which protected our resources, had right-living and foresight.![]()
