Default Jesus Portrayed as "King of Queers" in Play in the "Cowboy Capital" of the World

Texas Town Cross Over Play's 'Gay' Christ

A college student's production of a play in which Jesus is portrayed as the "King of Queers" has outraged residents in a Texas town that fancies itself the Cowboy Capital of the World.

Just in time for Easter, Tarleton State University is playing host to a student performance of Terrence McNally's 1998 play, "Corpus Christi," which depicts a gay Jesus performing a same-sex wedding for two of his apostles.

And though Jesus washed the feet of his disciples in the traditional biblical narrative, his character (called Joshua) in the play shows Judas the full extent of his love, kissing the son of perdition at Pontius Pilate High School's senior prom.

It's all too much for some residents of Stephenville, Texas, who say there's far too much passion in this Passion play. They are pressuring the university to call off the Saturday performance, which has already been moved ahead eight hours to an 8 a.m. start time to help head off protests.
"It infuriates me that somebody would be given a platform to be able to demean and degrade the Son of God," said David Harris, pastor of the town's Hillcrest Church of Christ. "I'm angry about it and every Christian should be."

Harris, who hosts a radio show, said phones were ringing off the hook in objection to the play's performance.

A school spokeswoman said it changed the performance time and boosted security to guarantee a "safe and secure environment" for the students, and it has now closed public access to the theater, which seats only 90 people. Only students and invited family members will be allowed to attend the show, which is an abbreviated version of McNally's play.

The production is a class project for student-director John Jordan Otte, who said in a written statement that he chose the play to "bring people together" and help gain acceptance for gay Christians, who he said often feel alienated from their churches.

"It is being said often that this play is a direct attack on Christians — their faith and their deity. It simply is not true," wrote Otte, 26, who said he is a devout Christian.

"I am not attacking anyone in choosing this play. I want people to see and understand another side to faith. I want us all to know that unconditional love means just that -- unconditional -- and I believe tolerance is a key message in this play. None of us, not one of us, should ever feel alone or separated from God or whomever we believe in."

The play presents a modern-day version of Jesus' life and death in 1960s Corpus Christi, Texas, with a few controversial updates. The apostles are all gay, Joseph is an alcoholic wife-beater, and Mary gives birth alongside a chorus of moaning men.

"At the end of the play [Jesus] is crucified with the moniker above his head as 'King of the Queers,'" said Harris, the pastor. "And they call this art."
But student Timothy Parker noted that the message of the play — tolerance — should be heeded on campus. "This is something being put on as a learning experience for the students," he told WFAA News.

Another student, Christopher Hepburn, called the controversy "ridiculous."
"This is academia, and one of the attributes of academia is cultural diversity," he told WFAA News. "Having this shown is something we should embrace as college students."

The hubbub is a historic first for quiet Stephenville, which is bracing for protests scheduled for Saturday morning. Campus police will herd uninvited guests into a parking lot near the theater, a move that has drawn notice in Fort Worth, 70 miles to the northeast.

"Tarleton State University police will need 50 extra state and local officers Saturday — because of a drama class project?" asked Bud Kennedy, a columnist for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Kennedy said the backlash against the class play "is beginning to seem like a blasphemy fatwa by the Erath County Taliban" — and as it happens, there already is a fatwa out against "Corpus Christi," which has long been condemned as blasphemous. Its inaugural run in New York in 1998 was ended abruptly by a series of bomb threats targeting the play's author, actors and venue.

A British Islamic group put out a death warrant against McNally, in 1999 when "Corpus Christi" premiered in London's Pleasance Theatre. If he visits an Islamic country, he could face arrest and execution.

Despite the controversial nature of the project and mounting pressure from the community, Tarleton State has stood by Otte's right to free speech.
"Legally we have to protect the student's First Amendment right," said Liza Benedict, associate vice president of marketing and communications.
"We really don't want to lose the people's love and loyalty for Tarleton over one incident."

I am suprised this is happening in TX rather than somewhere up north...though it is at one of those liberal multicult indoctrination centers they call "universities" these days.

I didn't post this to attack the ideas presented by the performers. I am a true supporter of free speech in all forms...and it is this recognition of our inalienable rights that makes stories such as this provoke me.

Recent history paints the picture of how liberals would react to a play in which homosexuals, gay bars, etc. were destroyed as the Bible tells us of Soddom and Gomorrah. (Note that I am not what one would call a Christian, but rather a student of theology.) We also know that the reaction would be amplified if such a play were to be held at a university. We know how they would react even if a more "peaceful" play depicting biblical stories were to be suggested at a university....particularly a university that receives state or federal funds, as I'm sure this one does. Not only is this play religious in nature...a big liberal no-no (when the religion, of course, is biblical Christianity)....but it is obviously and blatantly provoking....a term liberals apply to pretty much anything when they are trying to shut down an event that does not coddle minorities. I do wonder how they would have reacted if the play were portraying Mohommad as the "King of Queers."

I know I'm speaking to the choir here, but the reality is that free speech is an idea liberals arrogantly and hypocritically act to limit when the speakers are white (I know this play is not racial, but such examples are also endless), heterosexual, Christian, and conservative. It is my hope that someone down there chooses to counter this play with their own depiction....and that they choose to at least try (which may be all they can do) to hold it at a university. The more the hypocrisy is exposed, the more people will have no choice but to recognize it for what it is...and, most importantly, not only do they need to know they are not alone in their recognition of it, they need to be released from the liberal stranglehold that has brainwashed them into believing their recognition of it is somehow irrationally discriminatory, which has led them to complacency and inaction. Many of us here had enough a long time ago. Our dormant brothers and sisters obviously need to be pushed further. Rather than slowly drag it out over the next few decades, perhaps we need to kindly provoke the liberals into showing their true colors at every turn...more rapidly pushing people into a corner they will have no choice but to fight out of.

    Just a thought....

A play like this could take place in Canada with no legal issues.

Anyone putting on a play like this about Muslims,Jews or whatever would probably end up in jail.

    Welcome to Canada....minority rule.

How about the USA? Same disease, different symptoms.

Most Jews have no problem with this at all. You won't see Abe and the ADL stand up for Christians, ever. They hate Christ, have no morals, and are from Satan himself.

Homosexuals can not be Christians for they are breaking Yahweh's law.

This is disgusting. I would not advocate banning it, but it should be protested and condemned.

Old-fashioned remedies kept this sort of filth at bay.

Despite all the hype; I have noticed “conventional wisdom” is a complete failure.

We are now in the jaws of a sickened society that would have us jail a person for merely criticizing “a person like this” to bring sanity to the situation. Worse yet…… we allow it.

    Huntress:

I heard this is a bogus story. Go to snopes.com as I believe it is on that site. But I do see that the Ft Worth paper is on this so maybe the story on snopes.com is just a similar story that is bogus and this one is not. Don't know.

"...This is academia, and one of the attributes of academia is cultural diversity," he told WFAA News. "Having this shown is something we should embrace as college students."

The problem is THIS REFRAMING of what "learning" IS.

And the issue IS NOT FREE SPEECH.

Communist Atheists Propagandist think-tank and encourage this kind of project from people who do not understand the underlying reasons for it, or, like this student are told it's for purposes other than what it is.

THIS IS NOT A genuine "ARtistic Expression" in the way ethnic Europeans usually think of that--- an expression of "self experience," or "the divine moving through the world..." Or about "gay rights."

It is Brokeback Mountain Remix--- Communist Agitative Propaganda the main purpose of which IS TO DEGRADE, DEMORALIZE Christian heterosexuals, and disable them psychologically.

Repeatedly---- people respond as if this is a "Freedom of Speech" Issue, and is put into the double bind: wishing to uphold this privilege our families fought for so dearly, and yet sensing this is about MORE than just freedom of expression for the makers of this, and other similar projects.

SOME NEW WAY--- of handling this issue (that comes up over and over) MUST be found.

    A) It must be re-stated that while we do UPHOLD FREEDOM OF SPEECH

    B) We QUESTION THE MOTIVES for the production of this and other strictly political projects and propaganda-arts and their intended effect to degrade and demoralize others.

Until that happens, these people keep USING THIS.

Jeez. In 1960s--- Lenny Bruce did THE SAME THING. Abbie Hoffman. And it's just the same old, same old.

People need to find a workable response--- that keeps freedom of speech, but COUNTERS the motivation of this use of art.

The WHOLE POINT IS SIGN desecration, basically---- Ripping down American Icons and life.

As Yuri Bezmenov points out--- once this sort of propaganda has done its work, and the "old order" (which in America was a relatively good country, actually) is ripped down, destroyed, the people robbed, degraded, demoralized---- THEN the gays really have no more purpose. Their purpose is "out there" while power is being degraded. In the "new order," they might get some jobs, but their "liberation" is not really the main point. They are just USED.
