This has already been happening in slow motion for years, by the deliberate understating of inflation in order to reduce the cost of living increases paid to seniors,and reduce wage demands by workers.

Up until the Boskin/Greenspan initiative surfaced the CPI was computed each month using a fixed basket of goods. That changed after the Boskin Commission. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) began using substitutions in their monthly computations of the CPI. If beef prices rose, it was assumed that people substituted chicken. If chicken prices rose, then consumers would switch to fish. If all these prices rose, well consumers would become vegetarians or maybe start eating Alpo.

I got called into the local SS office last year and arrived at 0730 and the damned carpark was FULL of cars a lot nicer than my 84 Celebrity. Went inside this HUGE room which held at least 350 - 400 people. Looked around and I was the ONLY old person there. Most were 20 - 30 year olds, fat and healthy, signing up for SS disability! Considering we were just a few blocks from the Rio Grande, I suspect that many were "undocumented workers" (AKA 'wetbacks').

Had to wait until about 1100 to have my number called and the lady said there were no English-speaking counsellors currently available so I said a mojado would do fine. Conducted the interview in border Spanish.

When I left at about 1145, the room was overflowing but still NOT ONE SINGLE old person in sight! Just hundreds of healthy Mexicans talking on cell phones and ignoring their broods of dirty kids.

Did I describe the smell of that place?

This government attack on Social Security recipients is more than one step up from disgusting. Waging war on those who have paid into Social Security for decades largely I believe....and maybe some illegal immigrants too.
