Default Yellowstone National park grizzly bear 'kills hiker'

The attack took place on the Wapiti Lake Trail, in an isolated area near the middle of the park, officials said.

Park officials haven't taken any action against the bear, park spokesman Al Nash told the Associated Press.

It was Yellowstone's first fatal bear mauling since 1986.

"In an apparent attempt to defend a perceived threat to her cubs, the bear attacked and fatally wounded the man," said the park in a statement. "Another group of hikers nearby heard the victim's wife crying out for help, and used a cell phone to call 911."

Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones. I am not afraid. - M. Aurelius

    Sorry to hear.

It is kind of hard for New Zealanders to grasp these things. The most dangerous animal we have is the Possum.

There's an extremely powerful pistol, that fires the Casull .454, which has been used to fight off grizzly bear attacks.

Unfortunately there may still be a ban on firearms at national parks. I refuse to go hiking where the animals are given an advantage by law.

Some bears are "overly aggressive" in defending themselves.

They've got 600 bears at Yellowstone and this is the first one to kill someone since 1986. I think they can afford to kill this grizzly.

This seems like a good example of environmentalists going nuts in favor of the animals over humans.

What's going to happen to tourism if this bear or its cubs kill more people in the near future? This story should scare away a lot of tourists all by itself. A bear killed someone and the authorities are doing nothing about it!!!

Bear acted defensively in attacking hikers, Yellowstone officials say

    By The CNN Wire Staff
    July 7, 2011 7:01 p.m. EDT

There are more than 600 bears in Yellowstone National Park ecosystem, according to park officials.

(CNN) -- The grizzly bear that attacked and killed a man in Yellowstone National Park acted in defense, park officials said on Thursday, adding that they have no plans to kill the bear.
The female grizzly attacked a hiker and his wife around 11 a.m. Wednesday after the couple surprised the mother with her cubs, they said.

The victim, Brian Matayoshi, 57, died at the scene. His wife, Marylyn, escaped the attack without injuries.
Park officials were adamant that the bear's reaction was defensive and that the park does not have plans to track down and kill the bear.
"This bear is not marked in any way and has never been involved in another conflict in the area," said wildlife biologist Kerry Gunther. "We average only one injury per year and they are usually not repeat occurrences by the same bear. ... it was not predatory and we see no reason to take action against the bear."
