U.S. to propose mandatory vehicle 'black boxes' - BlackListedNews.comThe U.S. Transportation Department said today it will propose making vehicle "black boxes" mandatory in all vehicles by the end of the year.
The department's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has long considered whether to make black boxes, officially called event data recorders, or EDRs, mandatory. They collect data about the seconds leading up to a crash and can help investigators determine the cause.
Last year, Congress considered requiring EDRs in all vehicles. NHTSA Administrator David Strickland told Congress the agency was studying the issue.
The plan was included in a 197-page Transportation Department regulatory reform proposal released by the White House this morning.

My brother, what a profound and enlightening thought!
We sometimes find it easy to become discouraged and hang our heads in defeat. We give our enemy way too much credit rather than recognising him as a flawed but brutal foe. Our people have overcome worse and will again rise to the occasion. We ARE who we are.
Face futility and toss it aside like a dirty rag.
Black box? A little snip here, a little snip there, a little snip everywhere....

Negro, n. The piece de resistance in the American political problem. Representing him by the letter n, the Republicans begin to build their equation thus: "Let n = the white man." This, however, appears to give an unsatisfactory solution. - - AMBROSE BIERCE
The black box is already here, every GM car that comes with "Onstar" is already equiped to respond to emergencys such as the ones you mentioned, if you have a crash they automatically call you to see if you need assistance, the black box records your driving speed at the time of accident, the onstar can guide you to your destination because it is an GPS system, they can diagnose your engine if you have engine trouble, they can locate your car if it is stolen , they can unlock your doors for you, and they can hear you and talk to you, what more do they need ?
If you have Onstar perhaps you should snip some wires and go to Garmin or Tom-Tom for assistance that you can trust.

They just want to have a record of where we are and where we have been.
Good point.
The worst thing will be if the insurance companies get their way, and then they'll be spying on you to see if you're ever speeding. Good luck if they get the speed limit wrong for one of your favorite streets. (One street in my neighborhood has changed the speed limit about four times. You don't suppose there's a chance of a foul up there.)
