Elderly Woman Robbed, Beaten After Visiting ATM Speaks Out
The money was meant as Christmas present for her grandchildren.
HERMOSA BEACH -- Police in Hermosa Beach have released a sketch of a man wanted in the brutal robbery of an elderly woman who had just withdrawn money at an ATM. The woman says she planned to give the money to her grandchildren for Christmas.
The robbery happened around 11 p.m. on Christmas Eve after the woman took out $400 at the Citibank branch at 81 Pier Avenue.
Police say the 84-year-old woman then drove to her home in the 2500 block of Ardmore Avenue.
The suspect assaulted the woman in her garage and took her purse, with the money inside.
The woman spoke exclusively to KTLA, but wanted to remain anonymous.
She said she was getting some packages out of the trunk of her car when the attack happened.
"I knew he was right behind me... He had come up in the dark," she told KTLA. "I turned my head... and looked right up at his face, and he just hit me real hard."
"He cut me above the eye and I was bleeding," she said. "I went down, and I have bruises from one end of me to the other."
Detectives think the suspect followed the woman home from the bank.
Surveillance video captured near the bank show a dark-colored vehicle driving behind the woman's car.
She tells KTLA that she's now afraid to be alone, or go outside her home.
"I requested to do the composite [sketch] because I just don't want someone else to get hurt," she said.
The suspect is described as a black male, about 25 to 35 years old. He's between 5 feet 11 inches and 6 feet tall, with a stocky build. He was clean shaven, and has short black hair.
